The Hymera portable fuel cell system has been approved for use by Network Rail in powering rail infrastructure maintenance activities across the U.K. rail network. The system was cited as having performance comparable to that petrol-fueled generators, but with the advantages of silent operation and no particulate air emissions.

RUSTENBURG (miningweekly.com) – Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) on Wednesday launched the first of five fuel cell-powered locomotive prototypes to be tested at its mining operations in South Africa. The first locomotive would be surface tested over the next few months at the company's Khomanani mine, in Rustenburg, to establish the viability of commercialisation. Amplats delivered the project in collaboration with Vehicle Projects, Trident South Africa and Battery Electric.

Canada-based fuel cell developer Hydrogenics Corporation recently announced that the Company has been awarded a development project for a rail application of the HYPM™HD 90, together with the NRC-CSTT (National Research Council – Centre for Surface Transportation Technology). According to a company press release, "Hydrogenics is pleased that our platform of heavy duty fuel cell power modules has been chosen as the primary power APU for the hybrid light rail vehicle. Testing of the vehicle will take place starting in the fall of 2012 in Kingston, Ontario which will allow for winter cold weather testing."
